THE annual clash of Aylburton Upper Common and Lower Common communities at the weekend ended in an adults section win for the Upper Common, but you should not read too much into that, advises organiser Tony Davies.
"Somehow or other it always happens that the community where the match is played, that is us in this case, always wins," he said of the annual event which was to have been a cricket match.
"That was about five years ago. There has always been a bit of friendly rivalry and this resulted in the cricket challenge but when it came to the run up to the game it was discovered the Lower Commoners had signed up most of the Aylburton Cricket Team to play for them.
"Now this was just not on, so it was decided from that point on to make it a rounders challenge instead. It has been that way ever since."
Saturday's splendid weather was ideal for the clash and many came along to watch the fun and join in the social activities, including a bar, which have grown up around the rounders match. The Lower Common juniors squared things up by winning their section.
Each community had managed to put together a side and, Tony said, it was very gratifying that all age groups were represented this year – in previous battles younger people had mainly been interested.
Any form of training before the event was strictly against the rules.
The final score was a little hazy and it would be difficult to pick out any individual efforts for special mention, he said, "But some of them managed to hit the ball a long way."
