IF YOU think you measure up then give it a try...
That's the simple message from Lydney rugby coach Pat Kiely who is cranking up the Regentsholme machine for a crack at National League Division Two rugby this season.
Of course the club has done it all before. For two seasons the club fought desperately hard to keep its place among the top 40 clubs in England.
They slipped out of the picture until earlier this year when they beat New Brighton in an epic play-off to secure another crack at the big time.
And, for certain, they will be the only amateur team in the league.
"We will do all we can for them but paying is not an option. Lots of people support us as best they can and our chief sponsor, Derek Pomeroy of Pomeroy Press Products is truly superb but we can't match the resources available to other clubs," said Colin Henderson who is standing in as team manager for Gordon Sargent who is due to spend some time in New Zealand.
Kiely will be working his socks off to get the players up for the giant task ahead of them.
He is proud of the way his team performed last season and delighted they are all on board again.
Paul Price will once more captain the side and once more lead from the front and the only one of last season's players over which there is a doubt is prop Nick Bartlett.
"It is a hugely challenging league and we will need an expanded squad," says Henderson.
James Bashford, last season with Stroud, will bolster strength in depth in the lock positions while Dale Critchley, formerly with Drybrook and who made a big impression before being sidelined by injury, has made an impressive start to training this time round.
Three new scrum- halves are also training. They are Rob Collins, last season's player-coach at Ledbury, and Hartpury students Shaun Lynn and Huw Thomas. Winger Andy McCrea and centre Tryfan Edwards are also new additions.
Outside-half Dave Crossley from Monmouth will be in contention while Dave Emery is training from Berry Hill along with Ian Ridler, formerly with Chosen Hill.
Fitness training on Tuesdays and Thursdays is being handled by Stuart Pickering.
"He has introduced a lot of interesting and new ideas and if we lose every match it will not be because the team is not fit. They are really going for it and there is a lot of enthusiasm," said Henderson.
Lydney's first game of the season is away to Moseley who have recently named Steve Ojomoh as player-coach.
The old worry remains over front row cover and Henderson would like anyone interested to contact him. Tel: 07730 486991.
