A COUPLE who married in Lydney towards the end of the Second World War celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary on Sunday (September 7).
Glyn and Maisie Jones lived for many years in Chepstow before moving to West Sussex to be near family.
The couple were married in Lydney on September 7 1944 and had first met as teenagers while living in Chepstow.
Mrs Jones's family moved to Sedbury from Cardiff in 1940 when she was 15 and she met her future husband three years later.
Mr Jones was a petty officer in the Royal Navy and was at the Chepstow shipyard ahead of D-Day.
He married his sweetheart two months after the Normandy landings but he was quickly posted to Burma and did not return until their son was eight-months-old.
Mr Jones was promoted to chief petty officer and later went on to teach at the Army Apprentice College at Beachley for a short period during which time the couple lived in Tutshill.
Mr Jones was later posted to Hadrian's College in Carlisle where he was senior instructional officer but they moved back to Chepstow late in 1984 to be near Mrs Jones's elderly mother.
Mr Jones was awarded the Imperial Service Medal in 1986 in recognition of his services to the armed forces.
The couple still have friends in Chepstow and Lydney although they now live in Rustington, near Littlehampton.
They celebrated their landmark anniversary with their three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
