THE disputes on Brexit have concentrated on possible gains and losses but these are not the fundamental issues.

The objective of the EU is ‘ever closer union’ to set up a United States of Europe (USE) in which everything important is controlled by a central government.

The individual countries’ governments would have very little power.

There are perhaps benefits in such a system but also disadvantages and they ought to be submitted for consideration to the citizens who would be affected.

However the EU’s policy is stealthy, to press for a creeping increase of power while disguising the ultimate aim.

If we think that a USE would be desirable then the UK should take part.

However if it would be harmful then the UK must get out as soon as possible, whatever the short-term consequences.

The drive for union is understandable.

In most of Europe hated foreign soldiers have marched through the streets terrorising people.

The reaction is ‘never again’ – a Big Brother is needed to stop fighting. But this is a pipe dream.

The various European nations have different languages, sometimes different religions, above all very different traditions and lifestyles.

Cooperation is highly desirable, but enforced union will create a dysfunctional family in which dissension and ultimately revolt are inevitable.

There are already clear signs of this.
