READ with interest your article about the transport implications of the recent introduction of parking charges.

I would like to comment on one particular section of the article – "In Lydney, Bream Road was bearing the brunt.....causing a bottleneck which some lorries were negotiating with difficulty."

I have two children who attend Lydney C of E school in Bream Road, and whilst I would prefer to be able to walk them up to school each day, it's simply not possible for me to do this.

On the mornings when I have my daughters and I need to take them to school, the school bell goes at 855. I then have to be at Lydney station by 9.10 to get my train to work.  I simply wouldn't have the time to get across the town on foot at a reasonable pace, to enable my commute.

I can't comment on why other parents need to park outside the school but I would ask everyone to consider that perhaps there are very good reasons why drop-offs via car have to take place; often it's not "out of laziness" at all.

One thing I would say is that Bream Road is well known and signposted as being a school location, and I have often witnessed vans and lorries coming up and down the road clearly in excess of the 30mph limit at school open/closing times. It seems that it is seen as a "cut through" route.

I would suggest that at times around 9am and 3pm it is not appropriate that HGVs in particular should be using this route at the speeds that they often do. Does a young child have to be knocked down before a sensible attitude is taken by these drivers?
