A CYCLIST who was found critically hurt beside the roadside six weeks ago died of his injuries at the weekend, say police.

Two men have previously been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving in connection with the incident, when 47-year-old Alex Roberts was found injured beside his bike on the B4245 near Caldicot.

The "dangerous" road has seen 39 accidents over five years along its seven-mile stretch, according to a Monmouthshire Council report.

And only last week it was announced by the council, that a funding bid is being prepared for a walking and cycling route to make it safer .

A Gwent Police spokesperson said this week about the cyclist's death: “We were called to a report of an injured cyclist at approximately 7.05pm on Monday 5th August 2019.

“After being taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital, he sadly died of his injuries on Saturday, September 21.

“We can confirm his identity as 47-year-old Alex Roberts from Monmouthshire.

“Officers continue to request any motorists that used the road (between Undy and Rogiet) around the time of the incident to please check any dash cam footage that may provide further information that will assist officers with their enquiries.

“A 33-year-old man from Caldicot was arrested on suspicion of driving a motor vehicle dangerously and driving a motor vehicle and failing to stop.

“A 37-year-old man from Portskewett was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle and failing to stop.

“They have both been released under investigation.
