COULD St Briavels be on the verge of their greatest even season? This was a dramatic victory achieved in extra time; they have another cup final to play next month, and they are still in the North Gloucester League Division Two promotion hunt.
It will all come down to fitness and the ability to play two games a week from now until the middle of May, says manager Mark Wines.
"We are lucky to have a very committed squad. They stick together and it has helped us to achieve some good results. We were promoted last season and if all went well we could go up again this time," he said.
Wines said the Charities final was a tight fight. "To be fair it could have gone either way. We both had scoring chances and both goalkeepers made good saves. It was going to hinge on a mistake or a good strike and the break came our way in extra time.
"From a good cross Dan Bowlzer came in from the left wing and scored the only goal of the match," said Wines.
St Briavels will now play Howle Hill in the final of the Geo Sandoe Cup on May 3.
But they have a lot of football to play before that – the winter weather brought about a string of postponements and they still have nine league games to play.
Wines explained: "We still have a realistic chance of promotion. We have five games in hand on the team in third place and we are only five or six points behind them."
Do St Briavels have enough fuel in their tank to win another cup and gain promotion?
"We found the going tough in the second half of our league match on Saturday, but that was understandable considering we had played for 120 minutes only two days before. But we have a good side and the boys are up to the challenge. It's going to be an interesting couple of weeks," says Wines.
