TEN minutes to go and a goal down ... it was no time to lose your cool and get sent off.
Friendly or no, Lydney Ladies play hockey to win and Debbie Legge saw red when umpire Keith Bushell gave a penalty against her. She made her views known and was yellow carded – sent off to watch the game from behind the goal.
Debbie, of Aylburton, takes up the story: "I thought it was harsh and I was in a bit of a rage about the decision – I even threw my stick on the ground."
However what she didn't didn't know and everyone else did was that it was a huge stitch-up.
All her team-mates, were in the know, both umpires were in the know and the captain of the opposition, Cheltenham Civil Service, was also in on the plot.
It was hatched when umpire Keith Bushell, of Coleford, met Debbie's husband, Kelvin.
"I raise money for a charity in Cambodia and Kelvin offered to make a donation of £20 on one condition – I sent his wife off the next time I umpired a match in which she was playing," said Keith.
"I have to admit it was difficult because she had not done anything wrong. But having given the penalty the bit of back-chat was just the chance I had been waiting for and I showed Debbie the yellow card.
"The great thing was everyone knew about it but her. She took it all in good spirit but I'm afraid I can't tell you what she said to describe Kelvin!."
Last word from Debbie: "Watch this space husband!"
