AT the Forest of Dean’s recent full council meeting I voted against the motion calling for the Dean to be made an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

As the only Green Party councillor it would seem as though I had made a mistake.

But my decision was absolutely deliberate and here is why.

Both AONBs and wind turbines help protect the environment in different ways and support them both.

But AONBs exist to prevent ‘inappropriate’ developments in visually sensitive landscapes.

Unfortunately wind turbines are deemed, by the AONB, to be ‘inappropriate’.

This sadly is an argument we can not afford to have because, if we are to stand a chance of ever reducing the very grave threat of climate change, we must convert urgently to clean, renewable energy.

For the Forest of Dean I want both wind power and protection of our outstanding natural heritage.

But I couldn’t vote for both as the motion was presented. I will always work tirelessly towards protecting the natural world and for that reason I voted for wind power.

AONB status is simply no protection against climate chaos and record-breaking weather extremes that could destroy our Forest wildlife and habitats.

I simply had to vote for the most pressing urgency in this matter.

I know that local wind, solar and tidal developments can provide for all our energy needs both locally in our Forest and globally around the world.
