A COUNTY councillor is calling for all dogs to be licensed after a family friend's dog was attacked by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Mary Davies, of Trenchard Road in Bream, was walking her dog, Dippy, to the home of Councillor Alan Preest (UKIP, Lydney) when a Staffordshire Bull Terrier allegedly came "from nowhere" and brutally attacked her dog.
The incident, which happened last Wednesday at 8.30am, has left Mr Preest "deeply shocked".
He said: "I intend to put a motion in calling for all dogs to be licensed. This dog caused mayhem and it should not be happening. It doesn't bear thinking about what the dog would have done to my son had he been in his push chair."
Mrs Davies said: "I usually babysit Alan's son and always take Dippy out with us for a walk, thank God I wasn't looking after Charlie last Wednesday. The dog was on its own when it let rip into Dippy and left him with a puncture in his leg and scratches around his neck.
"He is completely subdued and the vet has given me tablets which he needs to take around the clock until he recovers. Dippy is only five and is as daft as a brush – he wouldn't harm a fly."
A Gloucestershire Police spokesman said: "Police received the report about a Staffordshire Bull Terrier attacking another dog at 8.50am. The Staffie's dog owner has agreed to have the dog destroyed and pay the vet's bills – which the other dog owner has accepted. Once we are happy this has been done no further action will be taken.
"Our report shows the Staffie shot out through a front door that was left slightly open. The victim's dog received scratches around the neck and a puncture wound in the leg."
