Northern Senior League

Division One

Lydney Town 0, Broadwell 0

THE result was perhaps predictable as local rivals locked horns at The Recreation Ground – and they have to repeat the occasion at Broadwell in a couple of weeks.

"Both defences were good and chances were few and far between," reflected Lydney's Roger Sansom.

"There's never a lot between the local teams – we drew with Lydbrook the week before which is a reflection of the way players contest these matches," he said.

Points were badly required by both sides. Broadwell are promotion candidates and could be in with a shout in the end-of-season shake up, while Lydney desperately need to cement their mid-table position and distance themselves from the bottom of the table scramble for safety from relegation.

Sansom makes no secret of Lydney's desire to play County League football and hopes to improve the strength of the squad for next season's league assault.

"We have a strong base of young players but like a lot of other local team we have a good defence but struggle to score. We lost Rich Kear to Cheltenham and Pete Macklin to Cinderford Town and that has knocked our goal-scoring ability," he said.

Among those who have enjoyed excellent seasons are winger Ricky Elliott and right back Ron Scott – both players can cause defences a lot of problems, says Samsom.

Next year, he says, there could be even more local rivalry.

"There's the prospect of Viney coming down and Whitecroft coming up and if Lydbrook beat the drop it could be interesting," he says.
