HOPES for a cycle path along an upgraded road near Magor could be dashed by the price tag, it has been claimed.

Work is underway to link the M4 at junction 23A and the south of Newport, the steelworks access road.

Most of the work involves upgrading and reconstructing the existing dual carriageway from the motorway roundabout the the steelworks entrance.

Magor with Undy community councillor Susan Sandham said she had brought up the issue of a cycle path at a consultation.

"I was told it would cost £1 million to put a cycle path down that piece of road.

"They talk about sustainable transport but they are only interested in cars and lorries," she told Monmouthshire Council's Severnside area committee.

She said getting into or out from Bearcroft Common was difficult because a lot of traffic was breaking the 40mph speed limit.

Work started on the £13 million road in May and is expected to be completed early next year.

There have been a series of diversions and night-time road closures as a result of work to the B4245 slip roads and these will continue until August.
