THE former editor of the Review’s sister paper, The Forester, has been named as one of five new deputies to the Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire.

Viv Hargreaves joins former NHS boss Roger Deeks as one of two new deputies from the Forest appointed by Lord-Lieutenant Dame Janet Trotter.

The position is an honorary and voluntary one, with deputies supporting events and carrying out duties across Gloucestershire.

Mrs Hargreaves, from Northwood near Westbury-on-Severn, has held a range of journalistic roles locally, including editor-in-chief of County Publications (including Gloucestershire the County Magazine), deputy chief sub-editor and features editor at the Gloucester Citizen and editor of The Forester, which is based in Cinderford, from 2000-2013.

Her love of music is reflected in her roles as chair of the Gloucestershire Academy of Music, vice-chair of the Royal Forest of Dean Orchestra, chair of the Gloucestershire Symphony Orchestra and chair of the Gloucestershire Young Musician of the Year.

Roger Deeks from Lydney held senior posts in the NHS, working in community and mental health services, and later in higher education.

He keeps horses, sheep, dogs and bees and has an active interest in the history, landscape and environment of the Forest of Dean.

The duo join Eve Jardine-Young, Principal of Cheltenham Ladies’ College, former BBC Gloucestershire managing editor Mark Hurrell and Cirencester entrepreneur Oliver Christie as new deputies.

Dame Janet Trotter, who helped found the University of Gloucestershire in 2001, has been the Queen’s ceremonial representative for the county since October 2010 and is responsible for a wide range of duties, including civic events.

She said: “I am delighted to announce these five new deputies who will assist in the work of the lieutenancy. Their diverse backgrounds provide us with deep roots into the county and will help us to continue to serve it effectively in future.”

Gloucestershire has had a lord-lieutenant since 1559. The role was originally tasked with recruiting and training men to fight rebels and foreign invaders.
