CONMEN tried to pass counterfeit £50 notes in Chepstow twice in the last week, police have revealed. The crooks tried to make small purchases at businesses in the town, say Gwent Police. There have also been reports that attempts to use the fake notes on the Forest side of the border.

Suspicions were raised by the consistency of the paper and the appearance of the ink.

It is thought the crooks may try to pass counterfeit notes in other areas.

Businesses are advised to use note checker pens or ultraviolet machines to check bank notes.
