BIRTHDAY celebrations have been held at the Sedbury Park care home for resident Ernest Frost, born in 1909, who has turned 105 years old.

Originally born in Derbyshire, Ernest was one of nine children, and left school at 12 years old to work on a local farm. After that he was employed on the railways, before starting as a security guard for the English Electric Company.

Well-known for his talented 'green fingers', Ernest was a keen gardener, and grew many vegetables and flowers.

He retired at the age of 68 and, in 1998, on the death of his wife Eleanor, he decided to move to Caldicot to be with their only daughter and her family: including three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He became a resident at Sedbury Park care home in January 2012.

Chloe Leefson, activities organiser at the care home told the Review: "Ernest is lovely! We have so much love and respect for him. He is a great man, and I and all the staff would like to wish him a very happy 105th birthday."
