BREAM Gardening Society held its first autumn show after many years of exhibiting chrysanthemums at this time of year.

The decision to have a general autumn show, which was held at the West Dean Centre on Saturday (October 23) was taken because fewer people are growing chrysanthemums.

Chair of the gardening society Diana Standing said: "Despite the problems of sharing the room with Covid vaccination equipment the team, headed by Helen Esplin, managed to lay out an impressive exhibition of entries in all the sections.

"There was plenty of colour with nine beautiful floral displays, autumn leaves and a wealth of pumpkins and squashes.

The work of local crafters and bakers also added to the quality of exhibits on display.

"The café did a brisk trade with cakes baked and given by many people.

"This generosity is much appreciated and gives enjoyment to the visitors.

"Besides viewing the varied entries other entertainment included a raffle and tombola, a plant stall and Julie Holder with her charity Packed With Love."

Bream Junior School took second prize for the box of autumn produce, a selection of fruit and vegetables.

The other school entry came from Parkend who put in a beautiful artistic display of autumn leaves which was highly commended. Kathryn Gardner was awarded the Miss Newall Cup for her harvest of autumn vegetables.

Lily Farr won first prize for all of her four entries in the children’s section and she was awarded best in section for her collage of autumn leaves.

Teresa Barnett went away with three cups for her craft entries taking best in show for her knitted christening gown and cap which was beautifully knitted in fine wool decorated with miniature pearls.

Julie Sparks won two cups for her floral arrangements with Rosemary Chicken taking the most points in floral to win the BGS challenge cup.

In the baking classes, Suzanne Snowden won most points for both autumn produce and the domestic section, winning her two cups.

Mrs Standing added: "A very heartfelt thanks goes out to all who helped set up - and take down - the rooms, the volunteers who make all this happen and most of all the exhibitors without whom there would be no show.

"Bream Gardening Society would like to thank the West Dean Parish Council and the Forest of Dean District Council for their continued support of our long-running voluntary group."
