BEFORE the kick-off Lydney Town officials admitted they knew nothing about Totton. They do now!

The FA Cup came and went for Lydney in an historic but ultimately vain day for the club.

However they took comfort from comments made by Totton manager Kev Dawtry who said that at two goals down the game was not lost for Lydney.

"When you chase the game there's always the chance you'll get mugged," he said.

Lydney manager Neil Hook said the result highlighted the work the team had to do. He described the performance as plucky and encouraging.

Lydney chairman Pete Elliott said: "I want to thank the team, the bumper crowd and our sponsors for what I hope is the beginning of a wonderful tradition at Lydney Town."

Lydney started brightly with Ross Scott's shot forcing a corner after six minutes. There was then a 10 minute period during which both teams felt each other out before Jon Kear had Lydney's second attempt on goal after 13 minutes.

Totton then worked the ball down the right forcing new keeper, Chris Forster to make his first save. From the resulting corner the ball was well cleared off the line by Aaron Goddard only for Totton's Matthew Monk to hit a 30 yard wonder strike into the top right corner after 15 minutes.

Six minutes later a through ball split the middle of Lydney's defence for Dan Mockridge to accept a simple one on one and Lydney were two down.

Totton then played confidently and controlled the game for the rest of the first half.

The home side obviously responded to what was said at half time and for 20 minutes an unchanged side increased their tempo, got tighter and looked more of a threat. Lydney's new bite was underlined when Mike Robbins was booked for a challenge.

After 21 minutes Adam Price replaced Mark Lee and after 28 minutes Sam Green came on for Mike Robbins.

With half an hour gone the game was beginning to get stretched as Lydney pushed hard to break down an organised defence but on 33 minutes the home side lost the ball on the half way line and a quick break saw Steve Jenkin get the third.

Two more second half strikes sealed Lydney's fate.
