DESCENDENTS of men from a Forest village who died in the First World War are being asked to help a project that will see a new war memorial created.

Forest stone carver Carrie Hopwood is planning to feature the faces of two men – one from Mitcheldean and one from Abenhall – to represent the Fallen on the new memorial.

It is hoped that the memorial will be in its new location, in Cross Gardens, Mitcheldean for Remembrance Sunday next year.

For the Second World War, it will be Harold Edwards, who was also parish clerk in Mitcheldean.

But the soldier from Abenhall who will represent the men of the First World War has yet to be chosen and it is hoped that descendants of the men will help with pictures of the man who is selected.

In addition, information is also being sought to try and identify three men named on the original memorial - Hubert Packer and Harry Smith from the First World War and Flight Lieutenant David Hardy from the Second World War.

The memorial will replace the current one which is a simple cross with a plaque recording the names in the churchyard at Mitcheldean Church.

Carrie, who is based at Taurus Crafts in Lydney, said: “Mitcheldean Parish Council approached me in October to come up with a design and I’m delighted that they like my design.

“It is a great honour to be asked to create a war memorial.

“It will be six feet by four feet and will weigh about two tonnes.”

Chair of Mitcheldean Parish Council, Cllr Jackie Fraser, said: “It is a stunning design and a very fitting tribute to the men who gave their lives. The current memorial is very small and it is very cramped on Remembrance Sunday in the churchyard.

“The new location in Cross Gardens has a lot more space.

“We know that Harold Edwards, who was clerk at Mitcheldean, will represent the men of the Second World War and we are now trying to decide who from Abenhall will represent those of the First World War.

“If there is anyone who is related to the Abenhall men from the First World War and could let us have a picture, we would be very grateful.”

While a site was being researched in Cross Gardens, a time capsule which was buried by local Scouts and is due to be opened next year, was also discovered.

Fund-raising has started to pay for the memorial and the next event is a curry and blues night at Mitcheldean Community Centre on October 19.
