I HAVE been concerned for a few years on the method of cash payments being denied/refused at our local One Stop shops/ council offices.

If flexibility within our capitalist system can be quickly introduced as taxpayer support for the financial institutions, why not flexibility and choice, for an ageing population, especially with our legal currency?

As legal tender the refusal of payments should be tried out in a court of law. People should not be forced into obtaining a bank account.

Most older people are familiar with being responsible with their finances, and should not be denied choice and method of paying. The incompetence and casual disregard of corporate governance in our monetary system could mean we older people are better at monitioring the cash in our private pocket or purse.

Although unpopular at the time, Monmouthshire County Council introduced the 'cashless policy' without consultation. The reason stated by one cabinet member was security. Pity the financial systems in national/local government did not deliver the same for the tolerant taxpayer. – S G Gilbert, King's Fee, Monmouth.
