A MAN with a familiar name is back in the driving seat in the role as the Crown's representitive overseeing mining in the Forest of Dean. Daniel Howell has been appointed Deputy Gaveller, a role held by his grandfather, the late Albert Howell (above), from 1973 until 1994 (see other news story).
In another ancient ceremonial, two men will contest the vacancy for a new Forest of Dean verderer at an election to be held at Gloucester Cathedral later this month. Former deputy surveyor Rob Guest and local historian Ian Standing have both been nominated.
