NEXT Tuesday's biggest predicted tide for a decade is expected to bring hundreds of people to Severnside in the hope of witnessing a spectacular bore.
On the Sharpness scale, Tuesday's tide is expected to peak at 10.3m (over 33 feet) and if conditions are favourable it could produce an excellent bore.
"Nothing is for certain on the Severn but this set of spring tides is creating huge interest," says Severn Bore Riders' club secretary Stuart Ballard.
"Surfers have become very aware of the bore and the challenge it presents. Tuesday's tide is the biggest of the cycle and could offer an opportunity for the top surfers to attempt a record run, but, of course, everything will depend on conditions on the day," he said.
Mr Ballard said film makers were planning to track the bore from a helicopter and from Minsterworth.
"We are expecting loads of surfers from all parts of the country. The recognised record run is held by Dave Lawson who covered 5.7 miles but Steve King has achieved 7.3 miles. To achieve runs anywhere like those conditions will have to be perfect," he said.
Hundreds of people will be at the most popular viewing points and the first port of call for many will be Newnham's St Peter's Church. Here organisers hope to boost church funds by selling bacon butties, hotdogs, plus tea and coffee.
The view from the churchyard offers an opportunity to see surfers take on the popular challenge from upstream of Bullo to Newnham nab – a run they call 'Boatyards'. Many more are also expected to attempt to run from Newnham to Broadoak and Westbury, while the biggest numbers will take on the formidable challenges at Minsterworth and above.
However the official advice from remains clear – riding the bore is dangerous and should not be undertaken.
The morning bore tides for Newnham are: Sunday 0636; Monday 0720; Tuesday 0808; Wednesday 0842. Add on 10 minutes for Broadoak and an hour for Minsterworth church.
•Remember to arrive early, park sensibly and stand clear of the river's edge.
