TOWNS and villages across the Forest and Wye Valley came together to pay their respects to those who died in the two world wars and more recent conflicts.

There were parades and services across the area with representatives from military and civilian organisations taking part.

Many of the parades were headed by local brass bands including Cinderford Town Band, Bream Silver Band, Severn Tunnel Band and the band of Lydney Air Cadets.

At Mitcheldean people gathered around the old war memorial for what could be the last time.

Work and fund-raising is underway for a replacement to the simple cross in the churchyard of Mitcheldean Parish Church which has served as the memorial for many years.

Among the standards at Chepstow was that of the local branch of the British Legion which was dedicated just a couple of weeks ago.

A bugler from 1 Rifles at Beachley sounded the Last Post from the balcony of the Greenman backpackers’ hostel which was previously the British Legion club.

The Bishop of Gloucester, Rt Rev Rachel Treweek was at Newent where she also presented awards to members of the Friends of St Mary’s Church.
