THE long association between Forest of Dean freeminers and the church of St Michael's at Abenhall has been renewed and strengthened by the dedication of a unique stained glass window.

The window was dedicated at a special service taken by well known Forester Rev Canon Cliff Davies. The dedication was carried out by the Bishop of Tewkesbury, the Rt Rev John Went.

On behalf of the freeminers Jonathan Wright described the window as "amazing".

"We were very fortunate to have the services of Tom Denny. He has worked on projects at Gloucester Cathedral, Tewkesbury Abbey and, most recently, Durham Cathedral.

"The window recognises the winning of coal, iron and stone and links and renews the ancient roots of freemining with those who carry out mining today," he said.

Mr Wright said St Michael's boasted many links with the freeminers. After roles on behalf of the Crown at sieges in Scotland and France and after returning from Agincourt, Dean miners had renovated the church and tower. The medieval font included carvings of miners' tools, and, more recently, freeminers had renewed worn stone at the entrance to the church.

The dedication service was attended by many freeminers, the verderers, members of the Commoners Association and the Forestry Commission.

"It was an impressive occasion and there was standing room only, said Mr Wright.

A special presentation was made by Canon Davies to long-serving churchwarden Florrie Baker.
