I HAVE just returned from a trip to see the 1st Battalion The Rifles in Afghanistan. I was sadly only able to make a short visit but I felt it was important, as their local MP, to show my support for them in the difficult and dangerous work they are doing on our behalf.
My visit came at the end of what has been a very difficult week for the Battalion with the loss of three men, Corporal Tom Gaden, Lance Corporal Paul Upton and Rifleman Jamie Gunn, in just one incident. That has clearly had an effect on the soldiers but morale remains high and they are incredibly resilient.
Among all the things I discussed whilst I was in Afghanistan, one thing came through very clearly. The troops really do appreciate the support they get from back home. They really valued the Christmas cards and the many parcels they received from people across our county. It means a lot to them to know that although they may be out of sight, they are still very much in our thoughts.
To finish on an 'and finally' note – I certainly didn't expect to carry out any 'official openings' whilst in Helmand province. But the 1st Battalion had other ideas. They had organised for me to officially open a new shower block on their base whilst I was there. A ribbon cutting ceremony ensued and a plaque is on the wall to record it for posterity.
They are doing a magnificent job for us. I'm very proud to be their local Member of Parliament.
