FOREST MP Mark Harper has welcomed the introduction of the Welfare Reform Act 2012 into law, which has introduced a £26,000 cap on out-of-work benefits.

It means that no family will be able to receive more in out-of-work benefits than the earnings of the average working household.

Mr Harper said: "The benefit cap will ensure that it always pays to be in work. Receiving £26,000 in benefits is equivalent to earning £35,000, before tax, through employment.

"When compared to £25,600, which is the average income, before tax, for a full-time employee in the Forest of Dean, it is obvious that this is an entirely reasonable measure.

"Ordinary taxpayers should not be supporting excessively high benefit payments for those who do not work.

"The Coalition Government has acted to curb a something-for-nothing culture, making work pay, while protecting the vulnerable.

"The changes will save billions of pounds of taxpayers' money and make sure that those who really need help can get it. These reforms will change lives for the better, ensuring that we can afford to give people the help they need, while backing individuals to take responsibility for themselves and their families, so that they can escape the benefits trap."
