A PIECE of Chepstow’s history that was rescued from a demolition site will have pride of place at a new backpackers’ hostel in the town centre.
The hand-painted sign for the former St Tecla pub will be displayed, appropriately enough, on the entrance to the bar at the Greenman’s backpacker hostel in Beaufort Square.
The sign was rescued by Robin Aston when the pub – locally known as the Tecla – was demolished in the late 1990s to make way for a discount supermarket.
Mick Lewis, who opened the Greenman’s hostel earlier this year, said: “Robin rescued the sign when the Tecla was demolished.
“It’s a hand-painted, metal sign and is part of Chepstow’s history – the Tecla was an iconic part of the town.
“We’re very grateful to Robin for donating the sign and it will go up above the entrance to the bar.”
