RESIDENTS of a Tutnalls, Lydney street where Two Rivers is planning to knock down garage blocks to use new homes say the action is unfair and may be illegal.

"There is already a huge parking problem in the area when many households have two or more cars," said David Miell, who rents one of the garages and currently stays in the house where his family has lived since 1966.

Two Rivers was planning to build on two garage sites and the block in question near Klondyke Avenue had not yet been put before planners, he said.

"This means they are moving people out without them being able to raise planning objections," he said.

"They have given some people very short notice. In some of the garages people have stored goods and not cars and it is impossible for them to find alternatives."

A letter from Two Rivers tells David's father Eric, 80, currently ill in hospital, says the notice period for garage tenancies is one week but they would 'like to discuss options.'

David Miell says alternative garages are being offered but they are too far away to be practical.

Two Rivers spokesman Vicki Wright, head of development and home ownership, said: "This site has been identified for redevelopment to provide two bungalows for the elderly residents being displaced from the Tutnalls Street development. We have recently submitted a planning application in keeping with this proposal which will involve the demolition of the garages in question.

"We have spoken to each garage resident individually and held a public drop in event to which all residents in Klondyke Avenue were invited; this included both private owners and tenants.

"None of the garage tenants have received formal notice as yet; these are to be issued shortly. Although we are only obliged to offer a week's notice, in many cases we will be extending this notice period to allow time for residents to move out their belongings.

"If planning permission isn't granted all tenants affected would be re-offered the garages."

She added that if Mr Miell or any other the other garage tenants affected by this proposal are concerned about any issues, they should contact Two Rivers Housing on 0800 316 0897.
