IT was a racing certainty that Cubs would have fantastic fun when they raced go karts they had built in a national event at Goodwood motor circuit.
And despite torrential rain and gale force winds, the youngsters from 1st Shirenewton Cubs (pictured above) flew the flag for Chepstow and totally smashed it, with medals all round and a trophy for the best kart.
A pack leader said: “This type of adventurous activity demonstrates the diversity of opportunities afforded to young people through the Scouting programme.
“And let’s face it, who wouldn’t be a tad excited to be able to say they had actually raced at Goodwood?”
The home made box karts were put to the ultimate test at the 12th annual Supreme Box Kart Championships on Sunday, September 29.
Cub Scouts aged between eight and ten and a half from the world’s largest youth organisation, spent months designing and building their karts, in order to navigate the famous race track, but have never before in the history of The Supreme, had to brave such elements.
A total of 252 heats took place on the racetrack before the final knock out stage.
The go kart event was the brainchild of Stephen and Amanda Bell, who introduced their own Cub pack to the engineering behind building such karts, followed by a small scale event joined by a few other local Cub packs.
Over the past 12 years the annual event has grown considerably and now has entries from all over England, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Organiser Stephen said: “Box karts are old school and although they are raced in a more controlled manor than when we were children, the adrenaline rush is still there.”
