PUPILS at Yorkley Primary School took gold in the annual Small Schools’ Swimming Gala held at Lydney Freedom Leisure Centre last week.

This was an improvement on last year when they shared the gold medal position with Ellwood School.

Events included backstroke, breaststroke, individual, freestyle, freestyle relay and four 25m medley races. There was an exciting finale with Yorkley gaining points in most races, eventually taking the gold medal position with 232 points (a clear lead of 50 points).  

Fellow primary schools that also participated were Offa’s Mead, Soudley, Aylburton and Parkend.

Higher level teaching assistant (HLTA), Pauline James said: “The children swam brilliantly, supporting each other during every race. Many parents came to encourage and support their children, and this helped us. It was a wonderful achievement."
