THERE was plenty of tea and cake to be enjoyed at the weekend as Lydney Hospital and Yorkley Community Centre hosted bake-off inspired competitions.

More than £200 was raised at Lydney Hospital for Macmillan Cancer Support to coincide with the annual nationwide coffee morning fundraiser, which takes place this Friday (September 30).

The top three winners of the competition were Mandy Bowden, Alison Henassey and Lyn Gardener.

Organiser and health care assistant Tara Iles-Potter said: “The cake competition and cake and tea sale were well attended and we had support from patients, staff and visitors. We raised over £200 and we still have more donations coming in.”

Manager at Yorkley Community Centre, Sandy Grenar said lots of bakers of all abilities took part in its inaugural event.

She said: “We kept the entry price low to encourage entries on the first go. The event was more of something for the community and to raise support and awareness of the centre.

“We had a lovely day and it was lovely to see support from so many in the community. We are grateful to all who took the time to bake, and to those who supported the event by coming along for a coffee and to taste the produce.

“We’d like to thank the Miner’s Arms, Whitecroft for their sponsorship, and Gina Song, their baker, who was our head judge. The success of this year means that we hope this will be an annual event, perhaps including a produce section next year.”

Linda Griffiths won the Best in Show for the adult section with a chocolate and raspberry cake, Nadine Cooper was show champion for the most points in the adult section and in the under-5s the winner was Emily Grenar. Best in Show for her fairy cakes and champion for most points in the under-15s was Eve Jones.
