PUPILS at a Forest school have been helping to create a remembrance garden in a neglected corner of its grounds.

The work by senior students at Dene Magna Community School is a joint project with Winston's Wish, the bereavement charity, which has a history of working closely with the staff and pupils of the school.

"We hope this will become a tranquil place for thinking and reflecting," said deputy head girl Stephanie Lewis.

The students have been spending their weekends and evenings helping to prepare the garden for its official opening this week, which will be attended by Winston's Wish officials and representatives of the school governors.

They have already installed a water feature and a pergola and have set about planting.

The also plan to bury a capsule, in the shape of Winston – the teddy-bear logo of the charity – containing the memories and messages of adults and children who have been bereaved.

Head teacher Barry Howells said: "Every year our senior students have a challenge. We thought the request from Winston's wish for a place to bury the capsule was a lovely opportunity.

"The students thought so too and got to work on an area that was a bit of an eyesore. They will raise the money to pay for the garden too."
