LYDNEY boxer Chris Higgs was "over the moon" on Monday when eye specialists at Gloucestershire Royal Hospital gave him the all-clear to continue with his professional career.

Unbeaten in seven contests as a pro, the 23 year-old said he was delighted to be given the OK to continue. He has not fought since April 2010 when he won a massive fight against Mark McCoullough by a single point.

The battle cost Higgs dearly as he was immediately admitted to hospital complaining of double vision.

Since then he had made a slow but steady improvement and received the all clear on Monday. He has to undergo further tests including a brain scan and eye examination but is optimistic he will soon be back in action.

Father Bryan Higgs describe the news as "excellent".

He said: "All Chris wants to do is to bring a medal back to the Forest. We have to await a letter from the specialists to the British Boxing Board of Control and that should arrive soon.

"Chris has been doing some light training and will step it up now. I have already spoken to the promoter and we are looking to get Chris back in the ring around the middle of September."
