A FOREST school gave a Kenyan visitor a taste of a very English tradition with a high tea.
Newnham Primary School has been hosting Mr Samuel Mwangi who is headteacher of Losogwa Primary School.
Newnham is one of 22 Gloucestershire schools that have partner schools in Laikipia county, which is near the equator.
Mr Mwangi’s school has 650 pupils aged between six and 14.
He said he learnt a lot from his time in Newnham and has toured the Forest and attended a special service at Gloucester Cathedral.
He said: “The young students have an opportunity to learn in small classes and they are all keen to know more.
“It was interesting to see they are well disciplined as many Kenyan students lose interest in education and stop attending classes.
“The school is well resourced with computers and projectors and other aids to make education easier and more appealing.
“It’s a far cry from what my school can offer – however, times are changing and the government is looking to issue each pupil with a tablet computer.
“That day can’t come soon enough.
“I also notice that the teachers are well-versed in a variety of subjects.
“My visit has given me the inspiration to introduce many of Newnham Primary School’s initiatives into school life in Kenya.”
