LYDNEY docks historian Brian Russell believes time is running short for repairs to safeguard the future of the harbour.

"I am concerned time is running out. There has been a lot of talking and not a lot of action and all the while the condition of the area is deteriorating," he said.

Mr Russell says the dock wall is opening at one point and being undermined at others.

"While these problems may not seem too severe at the moment, a bad winter can add considerably to the problem," he said.

Mr Russell, of Yorkley, is asking the Environment Agency for answers to a string of questions.

"I think we should be told if there is to be a budget for general repairs to the docks. And I believe the Agency should also publish the feasibility report which was completed earlier this year," he said.

Mr Russell believes the flood gates which failed and were replaced by a temporary dam should by now have been repaired.

"The original time scale was given as between 12 and 18 months. I have to say that if the scheme has to wait for the other major flood prevention work which could be as long as five years away, then the docks could well fail before then," he said.
