A NEW committee has been elected in a bid to resurrect the fortunes of a sleepy village hall.
Chairman John Phillipson wants local groups to make Alvington's hall the focus of life in the village.
"It is basically very good. I imagine a lot of villages would like a hall like it but if it is to be a success we have to spread the word and get it used," he said.
Mr Phillipson said the previous hall committee had worked hard to bring the hall up to standard and it was up to the new committee to make it work.
"It has such a lot to offer. We are urgently seeking ways to raise its profile and make it a centre for village activities. We are planning to bid for a lottery grant for further improvements but the first stage is to make greater use of the facility," he said.
As part of the plans to encourage greater use, the committee has organised an open weekend for October 14 and 15.
"We hope there will be lots to see. We are combining it with a local history weekend and we will have lots of old photographs and items of local interest to see," said Mr Phillipson.
Along with Mr Phillipson, new members of the committee are: Teresa Kirkham (vice-chairman), Bob Mitchell (treasurer), Claire Townsend (minutes secretary), Elaine Bollen (booking clerk), Steve Frost, Marion Winship and John and Meg Bryant.
