IT'S a quiet place now...a peaceful valley running through the Forest from the village of Sling to the outskirts of Bream.
But the Oakwood Valley was not always this way and Alan Remnant's recently discovered block of stone gives the game away.
Alan, head of a welding and engineering company on Lydney's industrial estate, made the find while carrying out improvements to his home.
"I was really pleased to find it. The stone is a link to the past history of the valley," he said.
He has become fascinated by the industrial history of Oakwood Valley.
"It must have been an amazing place with a deep mine, a foundry, iron mines and a lot of small pits. Today there is nothing but I would love to hear from anyone with information about the valley," he said.
Alan's list of valley industries so far includes Oakwood Deep Mine, Oakwood Foundry, the China Engine Iron Mine, Princess Louise Iron Mine and the Oakwood Mill, plus a number of small pits.
