SEEING that the Queen's Diamond Jubilee mugs for primary school children is included in this month's town council meeting, reminds me of an event just 59 years ago.

In 1953 two small boys, Clive aged seven and Tony just five, squeezed through an open window in Eveswell Primary School in Newport (the old original building). They then helped themselves to several bags of sweets, that were in the Coronation mugs, and exited the same way.

The sweets were found by our father, who contacted the school. He was quite cheesed off, because he had to cough up for their replacements. However, no further action was taken.
