WITHOUT ever achieving the spectacular, Lydney's Reserve team have worked diligently this season. They did so again, sneaking home the winner to see off a brave attempt by neighbouring Blakeney.

"We have not been winning by huge margins. For example we played Soudley last week and won 2-1 and then played second-placed Mushet and won by the same score. But the team is doing well especially defensively and then snatching the winning goals," said secretary Roger Sansom.

Sansom is pleased the Reserves are doing so well.

"They are a good mix of promising young players and more experienced ones. Because they are a Reserve team they are not always a settled side so we are very pleased," he said.

The winning goal against Blakeney was scored by young striker Jon Kear.

The Reserves are delighted to be top of the division but even if they won the league they would have to stay where they are.

Sansom explained:"The First team play in the league above them, the Northern Senior League, so they could not play there.

"The only way up is for the First team to win promotion and that seems very unlikely. They are out of sorts this season and are near the bottom of the table."
