I WHOLEHEARTEDLY agree with the letter submitted by Dr

Pearson in last week's Review. I should be interested to

know if a reputable pressure group has been formed in

order that the many people who wish to retain cheques

have a voice, as I am sure that others would join me in

being prepared to support it. Perhaps Dr Pearson has

ideas on how best to rally local people behind the cause if

nothing has been set up yet. Has our MP been approached

on the matter?

My son, who is studying at university, has told me

that he knows that many of his peers have run up huge

debts, partly because plastic payment is so easy to do –

just wave a card, and easy to forget – it's like being on

auto pilot. Many students don't have a clue about their

finances and it is worrying to think about how they are

going to cope in years to come with paying off a

multiplicity of cards, let alone the student loan.
