THE Wye Valley and Forest of Dean Tourism Association (WVFDTA) has appointed its first tourism chief.
Maureen McAllister has joined the association which, until now, has been largely managed by volunteers.
Tourism is worth about £300m to the Wyedean economy and her appointment will see her focus on bringing in more visitors as well as lead the association and its 350 members.
Maureen, who is originally from the Midlands, has a wealth of experience in the industry and has led the tourism and culture agenda for the South West Regional Development Agency. She currently lives in Devon but will stay in the Forest regularly.
Maureen said: "I'm in the process of meeting key stakeholders in the area and finding out what the attractions are. I already know lots about the area as I worked with Gloucestershire Tourism for 10 years.
"I will be making sure we are working in the right direction and look at what the area needs to make the experience better for visitors. The Forest is such a great place and has opportunity to make a positive impact."
Caroline Anderson, chair of the association, added: "Tourism in the Forest of Dean and Monmouthshire contributes £141.5 million and £158.1 respectively to the local economies, so Maureen's appointment is critical to the region's future."
