PUPILS from across 12 Forest schools have been supporting the Severn Dean Lions Club with its ‘June Spectacles for Recycling Initiative.’
The Severn Dean Lions Club has responded positively to Keith Wilding, their district governor’s, request to support his “sharing the vision” theme by asking children and their families to collect unwanted spectacles.
These will then be forwarded to the Lions Clubs of Normandy who have developed a facility for the spectacles to be sorted, graded and the reusable pairs distributed to clinics and eye camps in communities across Africa, India, the Far East and Eastern Europe in partnership with Medico France.
Ernie Pemberton, Severn Dean Lions President, said: “We are delighted to have received such positive support from so many Forest of Dean schools for this initiative.
“Sight has been the most important single issue for Lions Clubs who help run eye clinics, eradicate preventable causes of blindness and collect spectacles for recycling. It is wonderful that children within the Forest of Dean, by the simple act of collecting spectacles that would otherwise be thrown away, have done something amazing for others and made a real difference.”
