A NEW York author who wrote the true story of a blind abandoned kitten, paid a surprise visit to New Start Cat Rescue near Newent after reading about its work to re-home five blind kittens.
Gwen Cooper and her husband Laurence spent an hour with volunteers and its inhabitants at the charity in Malswick.
New Start’s tireless efforts to re-home domestic, feral and any cat with special needs came to the attention of Gwen when she was contacted by volunteer Samantha Green, who said: “I had read all three of Gwen’s inspiring novels and knew she empathised with the work we are undertaking. I wrote to her and was delighted when she wrote back and was absolutely thrilled when she told me she was coming to visit. She was very supportive of our work and the challenges of finding new premises that will serve the future needs of our charity and our beloved cats.”
Gwen added: “It’s always such a pleasure to hear from rescuers in general, but it’s a particular pleasure to hear from rescuers like you, and to read about other blind kittens who’ve been lucky enough to find people like you.”
•NEW Start Cat Rescue is looking for a new base after being served notice by their current landlords.
Jackie Bahooshy, charity co-ordinator, said: “We have had many happy years at our current home, and we are grateful for all the support we have received. We hope that we can successfully move on and help more animals in the future. All we need is a stable or an outbuilding with water and power and the charity and its volunteers will do the rest.”
