A LOCAL group have taken to their knitting sticks to help newborn babies, in third world countries, no longer endure being sent home wrapped only in newspaper - because that is all that is available.

People at St Mary's Church Women's Fellowship have so far knitted 80 colourful vests since the campaign began a month ago.

Marie Fraser Griffiths at St Mary's Church Women's Fellowship, said: "Every day babies are born into extreme poverty in Uganda, Kenya and South Africa. Many families are so poor that their babies are sent home wrapped in newspaper - giving them the name 'fish and chip' babies.

"We are shocked that this is happening when we live in a privileged country where this is unheard of. It is understood that ladies from other organisations in Lydney and the Forest of Dean have also contributed to this worthwhile cause.

"Charities who are promoting the knitting project are now asking for knitted and crocheted 6" squares to make baby blankets, cotton vests, jumpers and cardigans for older babies and children. This is great news for any would-be knitters who are not confident enough to make a jumper, and also for those who prefer to crochet.

"We hope that new members get behind us on this worthy cause."
