I was very interested to read your article on St. James' Church Lancaut.

When I was a child growing up in the 1950's our family, together with many other families from the parish of Tidenham, that is the congregations of St. Mary's and St. Peter's, Tidenham, St. Luke's, Tutshill, St. Michael's, Tidenham Chase and St. John's, Beachley, would go to Lancaut on one Sunday during the summer for a service of hymns and praise, a little like Songs of Praise on the BBC.

This would be followed by a picnic and fun and games for the children.

This was organised either by the Rev John Newman or the Rev Gwilym Morgan (who married my husband and I in 1967).

So you can hardly say that the church was "abandoned in 1865" because it was enjoyed until after 1960.
