ELLWOOD Re-erves have made a bright start to their league campaign although their 1-1 draw with Worrall Hill saw them bow out of the Charities competition after a disappointing run.
However, their fortunes in the North Gloucestershire League Premier Division already look a good deal more promising – last season they finished runners up, just ahead of Worrall Hill.
In the Charities game Worrall Hill went in front through Adrian Stacey, who capitalised on a defensive mix-up to score past a stranded Chris Lewis.
Ellwood captain Rob Powell equalised with a header from a Mark Blandford free kick.
Rob Meek is continuing as manager for this season's league campaign which has seen Ellwood draw one (2-2 at home to Lydney) and win two of their three games so far.
Having recently beaten Westbury 5-2 at home they won 4-0 at Lydbrook on Saturday with goals from Gary Wildin, Danny Baldwin, Mike Nelson and an own goal. This victory moves them up to second spot, behind local rivals Broadwell.
Some exciting young players have joined the club during the summer, particularly Gary Wildin and Mike Nelson from Milkwall, who will be hoping to eventually push for First X1 places. Additionally Stuart Arnold and Lee May have returned for a second spell from Sling.
Experienced players Rob Powell, Chris Stephens, Danny Baldwin and Martin Lee remain from last season's successful side, as does last season's top scorer Matt Stephens.
Other promising teenagers are Yoseph Hental, Steve Jones and Paul Meek.
Ellwood's first team have also made a solid start to the season with six points from their first three games and are mid table in the County League.
