MEMBERS of the Forest of Dean Athletics Club have enjoyed their best ever summer in competition to take the team title as champions of the Avon Track and Field League.

Consistent performances in every age group helped them amass a grand total of more than 2,200 league points, while they won four of the eight age group sections and were second in two others.

Reflecting on an outstanding season, chief coach Dave Lucas said it was hoped to build on the successes.

"We have a lot of enthusiastic young members. They are keen to do well and if they compete as well next season I would like to think we could take the title again," he said.

Previously, the only award won by the club had been the senior ladies' title.

"Our success is down to hard work. There has been a growing interest in athletics and the Olympics will give it another boost. We are hoping for even more members and anyone interested is welcome to come to our Tuesday and Wednesday evening training sessions at Berry Hill," said Lucas.

For now the club's attention turns from track and field to cross country.

The Forest club competes in two leagues – the Gwent and Gloucestershire – and Lucas says he is positive they can do well at all levels.

The club is also to host a major meet in December when they take responsibility for a Gwent League fixture held at Bracelands.

"There will be 1,000 plus runners so you can imagine there will be a lot of organisation to put in place," said Lucas.

"If all goes to plan we would like to consider competing at a higher level in the future but for now we want to concentrate on repeating our league success," said Lucas.
