UNBEATEN at home for two seasons, Yorkley Star knocked the stuffing out of a young Lydney team to keep on the trail for top spot in the K W Bell League.
But, should they win, the burning question is whether or not the Forest club would take promotion and ply their skills in the County League. There are issues.
Yorkley captain Tom Worgan explains: "If we did win we would play in Division 5 of the County League.
Most people want to test themselves and find out just how good they are and, as a team, I'm sure we would like to do that.
"But there are other things to consider. There would be additional travelling and we would have to improve our facilities. We would also probably need to field a Second X1 which would mean recruiting additional players.
"For now all we want to do is enjoy playing cricket. What would be nice is be able to consider our options at the end of the season," he said.
Tom reckons the present Star line-up will continue to improve. "If everyone keeps playing they're a good 10 years in the present team," he says.
There remains huge enthusiasm for the game at their famous picture postcard ground, the Cut and Fry. In addition to the League team there is a Sunday side and a midweek league team.
Saturday's league success was achieved in comfort. The young Lydney team began brightly and teenage opener Aubrey Stubbs – his father Edmund was playing for Yorkley – produced some great shots before falling to a superb one-handed diving catch made by Worgan.
Unable to create a worthwhile partnership, Lydney foundered against the bowling of Liam Hurcombe and Tom Rudd. The medium pacers of Hurcombe proved devastating and he ended with four wickets for five runs off five overs. Rudd took three for 20 in four overs.
A highlight of Yorkley's excellent fielding display was a superb catch on the boundary by Chris Edmunds who also reacted swiftly to run our Lydney's Richard James.
Hurcombe cemented a fine match for the Star by top scoring with 32. Lydney were put out of their misery by Dan Edmunds and Tom Rudd as Yorkley powered home for the loss of just three wickets.
