I REFER to the letter entitled EU Rules in last week's Review by Ian King in which, although he appears to approve our membership of the EU, he acknowledges the fact that it is not possible for 27 countries to benefit from it.
No wonder. The EU is a dictatorship. They won't take "no" for an answer. Denmark had a referendum on the Treaty of Maastricht. They voted "no". The EU ordered a second referendum be held after various false promises were made; promises which were already covered by the Treaty of Rome and the Danes were taken in and voted "yes".
Likewise, the Irish voted "no" to the Treaty of Nice, then voted "yes" to it in a second referendum. They also voted "no" to the Treaty of Lisbon that resulted in a second referendum to which they voted "yes".
Here is another example of how the EU cheats on its members. On the very day the Irish Republic voted "no" to the Treaty of Lisbon, BBC2's Newsnight programme (Kirsty Wark) interviewed the EU Ambassador to the US. That man should not have been holding that position, let alone be appearing on television representing it.
The instrument of law whereby the EU can have its own ambassadors is contained in the Treaty of Lisbon. Yet here was an ambassador already in post on the very day the Irish voted against the treaty that put him there.
It is clear, therefore, that the EU will do what it wants regardless of the Council of Ministers, European Parliament or anybody else.
If that were not bad enough, the European Commissioners' finances are in such a mess the auditors have not been able to clear their books for 20 years.
What sense is there being tied to 27 countries, all foreign to each other with nothing in common – and all huddled together in Little Europe, when we already have a family of nations called the Commonwealth comprising 54 countries and spread throughout the globe?
We should appreciate the Commonwealth for what it could become, and follow our destiny the way we have already been shown by our history.
