MONMOUTH-born Robert Munslow is in training for an epic adventure to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

Robert, 23, who now lives in Slough, will be one of a four man team who will bid to bring the cross Atlantic record to Britain by rowing from Newfoundland, Canada, to the Isles of Scilly in just 32 days.

"It is something I have always wanted to do. When the chance came along I just had to take it," said Robert.

His parents, Chris and Dorothy Munslow, are well known in Monmouth as the leaders of the Wyesham Scout troop.

But it was brother Phil who was the rower in the family.

"I was more into rugby, playing for the school and Monmouth," said the former Osbaston junior school and Monmouth Comprehensive pupil.

But Robert's interest in the great Atlantic challenge was sparked eight years ago when he read Tom MClean's famous account of his crossing.

"I knew then it was something I had to do. I thought about it seriously in 1999 but the cost was so enormous I had to rule it out.

"Last year I went along to hear Mark Stubbs talk about ocean rowing and spoke to him afterwards. At that stage he had a crew but I offered to join if anyone dropped out. I couldn't believe it when he contacted me to see if I was still interested.

"I jumped at the chance. To be part of an elite team that is focused on breaking the world record and achieving a world first is all the motivation I need," he said.

The record attempt is being spearheaded by Stubbs, a firefighter and former Royal Marine, following the success of Sir Chay Blyth's Atlantic rowing race in 1997.

The other crew members will be Nigel Morris, 38, and George Rock, 39, both from Ingleby Barwick, Teeside.

Robert is now in strict training – twice a day! – for the record bid which will take place in June.

There are three rowing stations on the 30 foot boat – Atlantic Spirit, sponsored by British Waterways – and the crew will take it in turns of two, two hours on two hours off, to row.

"Of course that all depends on weather conditions. If there is the need for three to row then someone will have to go without rest," said Robert.

The boat will make her first public appearance this Friday when she is launched by Tom McClean at Stockton-on-Tees.

A number of local businesses and individuals have already offered support for the record-breaking effort. For £15 you can take part in the record attempt by having your name painted on the hull. For more details visit the website www. oceanrow.com
