RAFT and coracle races, water pageants and splashing good fun for all could be hallmarks of a special celebration Lydney Partnership is hoping to encourage later this year.
The water festival is being suggested as a way of celebrating Lydney Partnership's regeneration drive in the town, and hopefully it will coincide with one of the regular visits by the cruise ship Balmoral.
A regular annual water festival or regatta could emerge from the plans.
A spokesman said the idea recognised the town's special historical relationship with the River Severn, the canal and docks, and events could also incorporate the lake in Bathurst Park.
However things were very much at the idea stage and people were very welcome to suggest items which might be included.
"Coleford has a very successful music festival, and there is also the Severn Revels, so although music will be incorporated water could be the main theme," said the spokesman.
"Lydney Partnership itself recognises the value of the water connection with its new ship emblem, and this is a way of reviving an aspect of the town which has been neglected."
The Partnership is planning to improve many aspects of the town with the help of a Market and Coastal Towns Initiative package from the South West Rural Development Agency.
It also sees itself working closely with the Docks Regeneration Partnership and plans to develop a range of sustainable energy sources for the town – again, with links to the docks area.
Suggestions should be addressed to the Lydney Partnership at the Town Hall, Lydney.
